Crushed but Called: When Purpose Costs Everything

There’s a sacred kind of weariness that doesn’t come from laziness, but from long obedience in the same direction

It’s the heaviness that settles over your shoulders when your heart still says “yes” to God—but your life doesn’t yet reflect the fruit of that obedience. You’ve walked faithfully, prayed honestly, served quietly, suffered deeply—and still, it feels like breakthrough skips past your door.

And it leaves you wondering: Did I misunderstand the assignment? Or is this what being chosen actually looks like?

The Myth of an Easy Calling

There’s a common misconception that if God called you, things will fall easily into place. That open doors will outnumber closed ones. That affirmation will come often. That the people around you will see and celebrate the cost of your calling.

But Scripture tells a different story.

Joseph had prophetic dreams—and was sold by his brothers, falsely accused, and forgotten in prison.

David was anointed king—and then spent years hiding in caves from the one who wanted to kill him.

Paul had a divine encounter—and spent much of his ministry beaten, rejected, and imprisoned.

Jesus was beloved of the Father—and a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3).

Being called doesn’t mean being coddled. It means being refined. And refinement almost always requires fire.

“Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings…”
—1 Peter 4:12–13 (NKJV)

The Furnace of Preparation

Maybe you feel like you’re in a furnace right now—confused, broken, isolated, and unsure what it’s all for.

Can I gently suggest something sacred? Maybe it’s not punishment. Maybe it’s preparation.

The very heat that feels like it’s burning you alive may be the place where God is burning away everything in you that cannot carry the weight of your purpose. The pride. The approval addiction. The fear of man. The need to control outcomes. The false identities. The emotional codependency. The illusion that you can do this in your own strength.

“I have refined you, but not as silver is refined. Rather, I have refined you in the furnace of suffering.”
—Isaiah 48:10 (NLT)

God refines leaders in obscurity. He prepares prophets in isolation. He shapes destiny in desert places.

And not everyone will understand your path—because not everyone was called to walk it.

When Brokenness Becomes the Birthplace of Authority

If your heart has been broken over and over again in the same places—if grief has hollowed you out and suffering has rearranged who you are—you’re not disqualified. You’re being entrusted.

Because authority in the Kingdom doesn’t come from success stories. It comes from scars. Scars that tell the truth: I’ve been through fire—and I’m still here. And so is my faith.

The widow who has wept unseen tears can comfort others in their mourning.

The man who has battled depression can recognize it in someone else’s silence.

The leader who has walked alone with God can walk others toward Him in truth and compassion.

“We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair… struck down, but not destroyed.”
—2 Corinthians 4:8–9 (NKJV)

You are not being punished. You are being trusted with the deep places—the kind of depth shallow faith can’t reach. The kind of depth that can pull others up from the pit.

You Were Built for This

You may not feel strong—but you are stronger than you think.

You may not feel seen—but Heaven is watching with tenderness and intention.

You may not feel like you’re making progress—but you are being formed—in the shadows, in the silence, in the surrender.

Your path is not harder because you’re forgotten.

Your path is harder because your assignment is heavier.

You were chosen for more. And yes, you are being tested by fire.

But the fire is not your end—it’s your beginning.

“After you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace… will Himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.”
—1 Peter 5:10 (ESV)

Hold on, beloved.

You’re not being burned up.

You’re being forged.
You’re becoming.

And the world needs exactly who God is shaping you to be.
