The Gospel of John is one of the most beautiful and profound accounts of Jesus' life, filled with deep truths about His love, His mission, and His call to His followers. Unlike the other Gospels, John focuses heavily on the identity of Jesus—His divinity, His relationship with the Father, and His purpose in bringing eternal life to the world. For the Church, John's Gospel is a source of encouragement, guidance, and a reminder of the heart of the Gospel: God’s love and salvation through Christ.
The Church: A People Formed by the Gospel
From the very first chapter, John makes it clear that Jesus is no ordinary teacher or prophet. He is the Word made flesh (John 1:14), the light that shines in the darkness. His purpose was not just to perform miracles or to teach good morals—He came to bring new life. And this new life is what forms the Church.
The Church isn’t just a building or a weekly gathering; it is the community of believers who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ. In John’s Gospel, Jesus often speaks of unity, love, and the mission of His followers. He prays for His disciples in John 17, asking the Father to make them one, just as He and the Father are one. This is the foundation of the Church—a people united by their faith in Jesus, called to share His love and truth with the world.
John’s Gospel also highlights the importance of abiding in Christ. In John 15, Jesus describes Himself as the true vine, and His followers as the branches. The Church draws its strength, purpose, and very life from Him. Without Him, we can do nothing. But when we remain in Him—when we trust in His word, rely on His Spirit, and love one another—we bear fruit that brings glory to God.
The Heart of the Gospel: Life Through Jesus
At the center of John’s Gospel is a simple yet powerful truth: Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). Salvation is not found in human effort, religious rituals, or good deeds—it is found in Christ alone.
John repeatedly emphasizes that believing in Jesus is the key to eternal life. One of the most famous verses in Scripture, John 3:16, captures this truth beautifully:
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
This is the good news—the Gospel—that the Church is built upon. The message that Jesus came, died, and rose again is the very foundation of the Christian faith. And it is this message that the Church is called to proclaim to the world.
John also makes it clear that salvation is not just about what happens after we die. Eternal life begins now—the moment we place our trust in Christ. Jesus offers a new way of living, one filled with hope, peace, and purpose. He gives the Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen His followers, empowering the Church to be His hands and feet in the world.
The Church’s Mission: Sharing the Gospel with the World
Throughout the Gospel of John, Jesus makes it clear that His followers are not meant to keep the good news to themselves. In John 4:35, He tells His disciples:
"Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!"
The world is in need of the message of Jesus, and the Church has been given the privilege of sharing it. We are called to be a light in the darkness, just as Jesus is the light of the world. This means showing God’s love in action—caring for the hurting, standing for truth, and inviting others to experience the hope of Christ.
Acts 4:12 echoes this urgency:
"Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
There is only one way to salvation, and it is through Jesus Christ. The Church’s mission is to boldly proclaim this truth, not out of arrogance, but out of love—because the Gospel is the greatest news the world could ever hear.
Living as the Church Today
The Gospel of John is a constant reminder that the Church is not just an institution—it is a living, breathing body of believers, filled with the Spirit of God and called to share His love with the world. We are not alone in this mission; Jesus Himself promised, "I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).
So as the Church, let’s continue to abide in Christ, love one another, and shine His light in the world. The Gospel is still the same today as it was when John wrote it: Jesus is life, and He invites us all to believe in Him and follow Him.
The Church exists because of the Gospel, and the Gospel is the Church’s greatest message. Let’s live it, share it, and celebrate it—because the world needs Jesus, and He has called us to make Him known.
