Jesus Is Coming Back: Living in Hope and Expectation

Throughout the Gospels, the book of Revelation, and prophetic books like Daniel and 2 Thessalonians, one message remains clear: Jesus is coming back. His return is not just an event in the distant future—it is a promise that brings hope, joy, and encouragement to believers today.

While some may look at Jesus’ return with fear or uncertainty, the Bible presents it as a reason to rejoice. It is the moment when all wrongs will be made right, when suffering will end, and when Jesus will reign in glory. Jesus Himself spoke often about His return, and the books of Daniel, 2 Thessalonians, and Revelation give us breathtaking visions of what that day will look like.

As we reflect on these promises, we are reminded that His return is not something to dread, but something to anticipate with joy.

Jesus’ Promise in the Gospels: "I Will Come Again"

Before His crucifixion, Jesus reassured His disciples that He would return. In John 14:2-3, He lovingly told them:

"In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also."

What a beautiful promise! Jesus didn’t leave us behind forever—He is preparing a place for us, and He will come again to bring His followers into His presence. This is the heartbeat of Christian hope: we are not forgotten, and our Savior is coming back.

In Matthew 24, Jesus spoke in detail about His return, describing it as a day that no one knows except the Father (Matthew 24:36). He warned that the world will be caught off guard, but His followers should always be watchful and ready (Matthew 24:42-44). His return will be glorious and unmistakable, like lightning flashing across the sky (Matthew 24:27).

Daniel’s Prophecies: A Vision of the Coming Kingdom

Long before Jesus walked the earth, the prophet Daniel was given extraordinary visions about the coming Messiah and His kingdom. One of the most famous passages is in Daniel 7:13-14, where Daniel sees a vision of the "Son of Man" coming with power:

"I was watching in the night visions, and behold, One like the Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him. Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed."

This prophecy speaks directly of Jesus’ return as King, a theme echoed throughout Revelation. When Jesus referred to Himself as the Son of Man, He was directly identifying with this prophecy in Daniel—He is the One who will return in glory and power to establish His kingdom forever.

2 Thessalonians: A Warning and a Comfort

In 2 Thessalonians 2, the Apostle Paul speaks about Jesus’ return and warns believers about the coming of the lawless one (the Antichrist) before that great day. Many in the early church were concerned that they had missed Jesus’ return, but Paul reassures them:

"Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition." (2 Thessalonians 2:3)

Paul explains that before Jesus returns, there will be a time of great rebellion and deception. The Antichrist will rise to power, performing false signs and wonders to lead people astray. However, he will ultimately be destroyed by the power of Jesus at His coming:

"And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming." (2 Thessalonians 2:8)

For believers, this is both a warning and a comfort. While deception will increase in the last days, Jesus’ victory is already certain. No evil power can stand against Him. Paul encourages believers to remain strong and to hold onto the truth of the Gospel.

The Return of the King: Revelation’s Glorious Vision

The book of Revelation paints a breathtaking picture of Jesus’ return. While it contains imagery of judgment and tribulation, it also reveals the triumphant victory of Christ. One of the most powerful descriptions comes from Revelation 19:11-16, where John sees Jesus returning as a victorious King:

"Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war… And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS."

Jesus is not coming back as a suffering servant—He is returning as the conquering King, the rightful ruler of heaven and earth. His return will mark the end of all evil, sorrow, and suffering. Every injustice will be set right, and those who have placed their faith in Him will experience eternal joy in His presence.

Revelation also gives us a glimpse of our future home. In Revelation 21:3-4, we see the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promise:

"And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.’"

This is what we are waiting for—not just an event, but a restoration of everything broken, a world where God dwells with His people, where love, peace, and joy are eternal.

Living in Hope While We Wait

While we wait for Jesus’ return, we are not called to sit back and watch the clock. Jesus tells us to be ready, to stay faithful, and to live with purpose. In Matthew 25, He gives parables about wise servants and faithful stewards—those who live each day prepared for their Master’s return.

What does this mean for us today?

  • We live with hope, not fear. Jesus’ return is a reason to rejoice! It reminds us that no matter how dark the world seems, God’s plan is unfolding, and His victory is certain.
  • We share the Gospel. In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus commanded His followers to go and make disciples of all nations. We have the incredible privilege of inviting others into this hope.
  • We stay faithful. Jesus calls us to love God, love people, and remain steadfast in our faith, knowing that our labor is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).

A Future Worth Waiting For

Jesus is coming back. It’s not a fairy tale or a distant dream—it is a sure and certain promise. Daniel prophesied it, 2 Thessalonians warns and encourages us about it, the Gospels confirm it, and Revelation gives us a glimpse of the glorious day when it will happen.

Until then, we live with hope, expectation, and joy, knowing that the best is yet to come. Let’s keep our eyes on Jesus, stay faithful in our calling, and eagerly await the day when our King returns in glory. The story isn’t over—our future with Him is just beginning.
